Insight Out is a conference organised by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) dedicated to empowering women+ in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and strengthening their professional networks. The event offers insights, lessons learned and stories from within the field next to six parallel 90-minute workshops.

To give you an initial glimpse of what you can expect at NWO Insight Out, NWO is offering you a sneak preview of two programme components.
Keynote prof. dr. ir. Felienne Hermans: More Women in science: why, when and how?
Some progress has been made over the last decades to increase women’s participation in science, but in how far has scientific practice changed to accommodate women’s lives, practices, and interests? Has there, in other words, been shifts in the epistemological core of science? In this talk Felienne Hermans, professor of Computer Science Education, will present a history of feminist epistemology and examine the changes in science through that lens.
Workshop Developing authentic leadership to advance your career
The workshop aims to support women+ in STEM disciplines to strengthen their (self)leadership and effectively navigate their career path in a field where women are underrepresented.
This session provides strategic insight and practical exploration of:
- Some of the dynamics of working in predominantly masculine cultures, as often found in academia;
- The value of ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ leadership styles and skills;
- How to identify and tackle organisational and inner roadblocks that may hinder career growth;
- How to maintain confidence and resilience when facing criticism;
- Understand the distinction between work that is valuable and work that is valued – and how to get to do work which is both;
- How to remain authentic and true to yourself, when taking on a (new) leadership role within a system not originally designed for you.
